HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012! (and other news...)

Season of wishes, wish of good health and prosperity to all our friends of course, but also wish of less foolishness in this world which lacks for good sense and respect of its own home, the Earth. I do not know if it will be the last year as predicted the Mayas a long time ago (and Hollywood movie more recently!) but it will be certainly a year of all dangers and not only for endangered plants and animals. So, my wish is human species will not also become endangered species.

And we will continue to offer you sometimes new products, sweet jams and other delicacies which are also the honey of the life.

CREAMY FRESH WHITE CHEESE WITH GARLIC AND BASIL
CREAMY FRESH WHITE CHEESE WITH HONEY
These two new products are ONLY available at ARIBU, the new restaurant and Deli of Gerry Ledesma located at Art district, Mandalagan, Bacolod. A nice new place in Bacolod, especially for the ones who like night life.
It is a fresh product based on cheese from cow milk good if you like salty (Creamy fresh white cheese with garlic and basil, like the cheese called "Boursin" in France) or sweet (Creamy fresh white cheese with honey, a french recipe of the Middle Age when sugar didn't exist in Europe).
Spread on toasted bread, it is a nice alternative for merienda at any time. Sold in container 100g.

A NEW ADDRESS FOR LOLA'S GARDEN JAM PRODUCTS
Technology and Livelihood Development Center (TLDC) presented since 2 years our products during the Organic Festival. You can now find our jams (classic, spicy and no sugar added) at their outlet near the Capitol, Gatuslao Street. There are also many other interesting products you can find only there, for example for food processing.

AND A NEW VERY RARE JAM...
The Roselle jam is our first flower jam. More exactly, the calyx of the mature plant is used to prepare this very rare jam. We need large quantity, something like 4kg of calyx to prepare only a dozen of bottles. That explains the price a little higher than the other classic jam.
Roselle is growing well in the Philippines but the production is very low and more for its medicinal uses. According to James A. Duke (Handbook of Energy Crops), the plant is "reported to be antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cholagogue, demulcent, digestive, diuretic, emollient, purgative, refrigerant, resolvent, sedative, stomachic, and tonic, roselle is a folk remedy for abscesses, bilious conditions, cancer, cough, debility, dyspepsia, dysuria, fever, hangover, heart ailments, hypertension, neurosis, scurvy, and strangury", not less! As usual, we are not claiming jam is medicine. But serious scientific works show every day its interest.
And about the jam, I guarantee a very original taste, like the European red fruits jams which are probably the best existing jams (rasberry, gooseberry,...). Try it rapidly, the stocks are very low! It will be available this coming Friday at Bob's, Virgie's and Pendy's outlets.

By the way, we will give a new look to all our labels and we inaugurate with this Roselle jam. Other labels for the other products will change step by step.

SICANA OR CASSABANANA JAM, THE NEW JAM OF THE MONTH

You will probably think: "What's that, Cassava or Banana or a mixing of the two?" and, sorry, you're wrong. And I was like you when Josef Sagemuller asked me one time: "Do you know Cassabanana and what can I do with that?"
A few click later, it appeared Cassabanana was the English name of Sicana odorifera, a Brazilian origin cucurbit. The fruit is a sort of a big cucumber (30 to 60 cm long, diameter 10 to 12 cm)  red violet color with a very hard woody skin. The vine can reach 15 m.
A strong bolo reveals a sweet orange meat with a very original taste. The South American people use it directly as a refreshing drink during hot summer. Of course they make also preserves. It has also medicinal virtues (loss of voice, reduce fever) and dried slices of the fruit stocked in the cloth gives a nice smelt and cast out the moths.

And if now, here in Bacolod, you can discover this original fruit and very nice jam, it is because Josef had, one day, the idea to plant some seeds of Sicana in his garden of rare plants.
I let you discover the taste very original; our taster detected savor of vanilla, squash, melon, iced chestnut.
The launching is starting Friday 15th of July at Bob's Pastry (Deli, North Drive, Gaisano and Lopue's East), Pendy's, Virgie's, Merci (Singcang, Mandalagan and SM), Frankie's and Margie's.

New prices
After one year, we observed the increasing of prices of our packaging, of the gasoline, of the gazul, of the raw material at the market... etc., the list is long. We have to add  10 P only per bottle (factory gate price). This increase will be effective on 1st of August 2011.

COMING SOON: FRUITS IN VODKA

Many hundred years old people in France do not follow the advices of the doctors and may be that's why they reach a so great age! Jeanne Calment, the oldest people of the world died at 122 years 5 months and 14 days.
She supposed she was so old because of her diet: olive oil (used also for skin), one kilogram of chocolate and one glass of wine of Porto per week.
That is to say, drinking of alcohol with moderation is not bad for health. And with our new product, FRUITS IN VODKA, you will enjoy the pleasure of a typical French digestive made with fruits macerated a long time in alcohol, in this case, vodka. It can be called, Fruits in liquor or brandied fruits and it is considered as a lady drink where men prefer stronger alcohol (of course, it is not recommended for kids). Very often, a special kind of cherries are used but other fruits or mixing of fruits can be utilized. The art of this preparation is a subtle balance between fruits, sugar, an alcohol 40 to 45° "eau de vie" - water of life (!) in french -, and some spices. It needs also time because like with good wine, older it is, better it tastes. That is why you will find under the bottle a label with the best moment to use it, after and before a date. After 2 to 3 months the fruits are developing their aroma in the alcohol and until at least 3 years, they continue to improve the flavor. The degree of alcohol decreases and after 3 years the fruits can become very soft.
Generally we drink or eat these light alcoholic preparation after lunch or dinner to facilitate the digestion. But it is not a medicine, it is a real pleasure of the table.
In the movie "Belle de jour" (Luis Bunuel, 1967) Madame Anais (Genevieve Page)
offers some "cerises a l'eau de vie" (brandied cherries) to Severine Serizy
(the great actress Catherine Deneuve)
The introduction of the FRUITS IN VODKA at Virgie's and Bob's North Drive was a great success and the stocks are very low. Hopefully new batches are in preparation and you will find this nice digestive at the different Bob's, at Pendy's and Virgie's stores and restaurants within 3 to 4 weeks.

BREAKING NEWS
Margie's opened a new outlet in Lacson Street just in front the computer store EICC. Our jams are now available there.

ABOUT THE NO SUGAR ADDED JAMS
When we introduced the NO SUGAR ADDED JAMS (Mango nutmeg, Guyabano calamansi, Jackfruit cinnamon and Banana cloves) we preferred to keep them in the chillers at Bob's store only. The point was the unknown shelf life of these original products at room temperature. As they didn't contain sugar, the risk was a possible contamination so the recommendation was to keep them at any time in the fridge. Hopefully our tests of conservation at room temperature showed their was no contamination after 6 months (thanks to the sterilization at the end of the production). Consequently:
- it is now possible to keep them at room temperature in the stores and at home, except, of course, when the bottle has been opened,
- you can find now the NO SUGAR ADDED FRUITS A TARTINER at Virgie's and Pendy's restaurant.

PROVERB OF THE MONTH
From Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, (1755-1826) the most well known French gastronome:
"The pleasure of the table is for every ages, every countries, every days; it can be associated to all the other pleasures but stay the last one to console you from the lost of the others".
