From Francoise Sagan: "Culture is like jam: the less we have the more we spread it."
With a correction from an anonymous:"Culture is like jam: the more we taste, the more we eat again."
From Alexandre Vialatte: " Jam is only good if you need to climb on a chair to get the jar inside the cupboard."
From Abu Shakour: "Among ten sorts of jams and ten sorts of soups, it is allowed to be gourmet of one only."
From Alphonse Allais: "Some women are like a stick covered with rose jam: you don't know how to take them."
From Stanislaw Jerzi Lec:"With dreams, it is also possible to make jams. You only need to add fruits and sugar."
A Turkish saying:"There are talks which look like salty jams."
And for finishing, from one of the greatest French novelist, Gustave Flaubert:"The truth is not made to comfort like a slice of bread with jam you give to crying kids. You have to look it for, no more and put aside from you what is not it."
The weekly recipe:
No real recipe today. After these days of culinary excesses, let our stomach take a rest. So just an advice for your next apple pie (or any other fruit pie). I remember my Lola, at the end of the Sunday apple pie cooking, was adding a table spoon of jam on the fruits to get a shiny pie and also more tasty. It was much better than sugar and the sweetness of the jam married with the acidity of the apple. It was a great sensation, one of these sensation you never forget. You can find in your memory and feel the taste in your mouth, just only thinking to it.
The question of the week:
Some of the spicy jam like the ginger jam or the red chili jam are very spicy. Is it harmful for the stomach?
No spices are not harmful for the stomach. Before, doctors believed ulcer was related with stress and spiced meals. In fact 80% of the ulcers are caused by a bacteria which infects the stomach mucosa.
But spices are not only a great enhancement of the taste of the meals. About health, among many other positive effects:
- The spices may cut breast cancer risk,
- Adding a little spice to your hamburgers can do more than just give them a kick. It can actually help to reduce their carcinogens, or substances that cause cancer, according to a new study,
- replace salt with spices reduces harmful pre-menstrual syndrome,
- and yes, during pregnancy and breast feeding, you can eat spicy.
